The Backstory & Mazda Legacy

The Mazda RX-7 is one of the most iconic sports  cars in automotive history — a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive JDM legend powered by Mazda’s unique rotary engine. Celebrated for its balance, agility, and high-revving character, the RX-7 has inspired countless enthusiasts worldwide to chase the perfect blend of performance and style. Its FD generation, produced between 1992 and 2002, is particularly revered for its sleek design, responsive handling, and racing pedigree, making it a dream platform for both track and street builds.

For Raymond Tsang, originally from Hong Kong and now based in Toronto, the RX-7 represented more than performance; it was a connection to the racing heroes and  car culture he grew up admiring. “I grew up watching Jacky Chan and Ekin films,” Raymond recalls, “then discovered Initial D — every drift, every time attack battle — it spoke to me. That’s how my love for the Mazda RX-7 FD3S started.”

The 1993 RX-7 became more than a car; it became a canvas for Raymond to channel his dream of a street-legal race car, blending aggressive performance with authentic JDM styling.

Why the TCP Magic RX-7?

Raymond didn’t just want an RX-7 — he wanted one that looked and felt like it belonged on Tsukuba’s time attack circuit, but could still be driven through Toronto’s city streets.

“I’ve always loved cars that look like full-on race machines, but you can take them out on the street. That’s exactly what I wanted from this car.”

The choice of the TCP Magic V3 widebody kit provided the perfect base — a sculpted, aggressive stance synonymous with top-tier JDM performance builds.

Bodywork & Exterior Details

The exterior is a showcase of carbon and aero:

  • TCP Magic V3 widebody with custom RGN fender and hood vents
  • RE carbon hood and gurney flaps, Seibon carbon hatch, doors, and hood
  • CarShop Glow rear diffuser and Voltex Type 5 1700mm wing with gurney flap
  • Evor GT mirrors, custom projector headlights by RXLights, and R-Light infinity tail lights

Every panel, vent, and wing has a purpose — improving airflow, downforce, and style while staying street-legal. Raymond’s approach balances race function with striking visual presence, making the car unmistakable in any parking lot or track session.

Performance Upgrades

Under the hood, Raymond’s RX-7 is a beast:

  • Custom Garrett GT35 single turbo conversion
  • Vibrant V-mount intercooler with Tial wastegate and blow-off valve
  • Custom downpipe and midpipe, ending with an HKS carbon Ti muffler
  • Defi gauges for complete engine monitoring

The chassis is equally well sorted:

  • Brembo 6-piston front brakes for stopping power
  • Advan RZF2 18×11 +15 wheels wrapped in Nitto tires for ultimate grip

The result is 450whp and 300tq, perfectly balanced for aggressive street driving and spirited track sessions.

Interior & Audio

Raymond didn’t skimp on comfort or immersion:

  • Recaro SPJ Cryola seats
  • Custom audio setup by Memphis Audio, including dual 10” subwoofers, 6.5” door and rear speakers, DSP, mono-block, and 4-channel amps
  • Sony double-din head unit for media control

The interior remains driver-focused while giving a nod to high-end street car lifestyle.

The Build Philosophy

Raymond’s RX-7 is all about precision, personality, and JDM authenticity. Every component — from the carbon panels to the single turbo setup — reflects his vision of a race car that lives on the street.

“It’s not just about horsepower,” he explains. “It’s about creating something that looks purposeful and performs exactly how I want it to. That’s the soul of a TCP Magic build.”

Future Plans

The next stage is ambitious:

  • K24 engine swap paired with a BMW ZF transmission
  • Ford 8.8 rear end
  • Power target: 700–800whp

These upgrades promise to take the RX-7 from a street-legal track-inspired build to a true time attack competitor, while staying practical for daily driving.
