“We are the builders, and you are the designer. We build the client’s vision, their goals, their version of cool, and exactly what they want their Z to do, look like, and ultimately feel like.” – Al Allen, California Datsun
From Group Z Club to California Datsun
Al Allen was born and raised in California. Lived in El Monte as a kid and Irvine as a young adult during college. Currently hangs his hat in Woodcrest, California.
He’s been part of car culture since childhood. Joined the popular Group Z car club back in the early ’90s. Soon after, I worked for Enterprise Rent-A-Car and made several connections in the auto industry. Attended every car show he could find.
His personal 260Z was featured in everything from magazine centrefolds (that was a big deal back then) to 8-foot trophy winners at Hot Import Nights car show.
That foundation—real passion, genuine connections, actual show presence—became the backbone of California Datsun, which Al has owned since 2008.
And his approach to every build reflects that history. He doesn’t impose a vision. He builds the client’s vision. That philosophy shows perfectly in Rick Gonzalez’s 1972 Datsun 240Z build (https://www.nissan-global.com).

Kilimanjaro White: Choosing Timeless
Rick Gonzalez wanted something different from the trend-chasing builds that dominate social media.
He wanted a classic, timeless look. So he chose Kilimanjaro White—the original Datsun factory color. Not custom. Not trending. Just clean, classic, and authentic.
California Datsun took that vision seriously. The entire car was fully painted on a rotisserie with color inside and out, top to bottom. That level of attention matters. It’s the difference between a good paint job and a proper restoration-quality finish.
The result? A 1972 Datsun 240Z build that looks like it could have rolled off the factory line yesterday, except it’s more refined, faster, and better in every way that matters.
L28 Stroker to 3.0L: Speed and Functionality
Rick wanted speed. Real speed. Not just the look of speed.
California Datsun built him an L28 stroked out to 3.0 liters with a complete modern standalone fuel injection system by AEM. This isn’t a carbureted throwback build. This is modern fuel management on a classic engine.
Smooth shifting 5-speed from a 280ZX. Ceramic coated header for durability and flow. Borla exhaust system for proper sound and performance. Performance cam for aggressive power delivery. 3.90 R180 limited slip differential for traction.
The engine is balanced and blueprinted—every component checked, verified, and optimized. Dyno tuned by Ericks Racing out in Baldwin Park for real-world performance data.
This 1972 Datsun 240Z build isn’t fast on paper. It’s fast in reality. There’s a difference.

Subtle Elegance: European Chrome and LED Lighting
The 1972 Datsun 240Z build looks impressive just standing still.
Beautiful styling with subtle yet tasteful upgrades. Smooth euro chrome bumpers that respect the original lines instead of fighting them. LED lighting package that brings modern visibility to a classic design.
California Datsun classic chrome mirrors set this Z apart from all the others. It’s not about flashy modifications. It’s about thoughtful upgrades that enhance what’s already great.
The polished brightwork and trim throughout catch the light properly. The 17″ Rota silver wheels wrapped in new rubber sit perfectly in the arches. Everything works together.
In fact the build impressed Chip Foose —legendary car designer and builder. When someone with that level of expertise stops to appreciate your car, you know you’ve done something right.
That’s not luck. That’s execution.
Interior: Red Leather and Speedhut Gauges
The interior of Rick’s 1972 Datsun 240Z build gets handled by professionals who understand quality.
Rogelios Upholstery in Baldwin Park executed the red leather interior with bolstered seats, ambient lighting, and custom door panels. The Alpine stereo provides modern sound without destroying the classic aesthetic.
A full set of Speedhut gauges gives you information at a glance. Temperature. Oil pressure. Fuel level. Everything a driver needs to know.
The interior balances nostalgia with function. It respects the era while acknowledging that modern comfort matters when you’re actually driving the car.

California Datsun’s Collaborative Approach
This 1972 Datsun 240Z build represents California Datsun’s strength: knowing when to do the work in-house and when to trust specialists.
California Datsun handled the mechanical work and assembly. Rogelios Upholstery handled the interior. Ericks Racing handled the dyno tuning. Young Gun Coatings handled the paint. R-Rated Motorsports handled the ECU wiring.
That’s a team of specialists all focused on one goal: executing Rick’s vision properly.
Al’s son helped make this Z amazing—another reflection of the personal touch California Datsun brings to every build.

Why This Build Matters
Rick Gonzalez’s 1972 Datsun 240Z build represents something rare: a customer who knew exactly what he wanted and trusted California Datsun to execute it properly.
He didn’t want the loudest car. He didn’t want the trendiest car. He wanted a car that looked like it could have left the factory yesterday but performed like nothing from that era could.
California Datsun delivered exactly that.
The 1972 Datsun 240Z build proves that you don’t need bold colors, widebody kits, or extreme modifications to turn heads. You just need the right vision executed properly.
And when legendary designers like Chip Foose stop to appreciate your work, you know you’ve achieved something special.
